How Shaft Specs Actually Interact With Attack Angle

Flex, weight, kick point, and torque don't work in isolation — each one changes how your attack angle translates into the loft you deliver at impact.

Flex

Flex describes how much a shaft bends under load. A shaft too soft for your tempo will over- release and add loft you didn't ask for; too stiff and it under-releases, reducing launch. Flex is tempo-dependent, not purely speed-dependent — two golfers with the same clubhead speed can need different flexes if their transition is different.

Weight

Shaft weight affects swing tempo and, indirectly, attack angle itself. A heavier shaft can help a steep attacker shallow out their delivery without any swing change; a lighter shaft can help a golfer struggling for speed generate more clubhead speed, sometimes at the cost of control.

Kick Point

Kick point is where a shaft bends most through the swing. A lower kick point tends to add launch and can help an already-steep attacker who needs more help getting the ball airborne; a higher kick point does the opposite, useful for an ascending attacker who's already launching plenty high.

Torque

Torque measures how much a shaft twists during the swing. Lower torque shafts resist twisting and suit faster, more aggressive transitions; higher torque shafts flex more freely and can help smoother tempos square the face more easily through impact.

Steel vs. Graphite

Which Material, and Where

Steel shafts are heavier and typically lower-launching, favored in irons and wedges where control and consistent lie contact matter most. Graphite is lighter and generally higher-launching, dominant in drivers and fairway woods where clubhead speed and launch matter more than absolute control. Neither is universally "better" — the right choice depends on your attack angle, tempo, and which club you're fitting.

How This Plays Out

Two Golfers, Same Speed, Different Shafts

A golfer with a steep descending attack angle and a quick transition often ends up in a heavier, lower-torque, lower-kick-point steel shaft in the irons to add stability and a touch more launch. A golfer with a shallower, ascending attack angle and a smoother tempo more often ends up in a lighter, higher-kick-point shaft that doesn't add launch they don't need. Neither spec is "correct" in general — only correct for that specific attack angle and tempo.
