Iron Attack Angle: The Descending Strike Golfers Fear for No Reason

A surprising number of golfers arrive at their first fitting worried that a negative attack angle reading on their irons means something is wrong with their swing. In reality, a descending strike on an iron is exactly how the club is designed to work — the real question isn't whether the number is negative, it's whether it's the right amount of negative.
Why Irons Are Built to Be Hit Down On
An iron's loft and grooves are designed to compress the ball against the ground for a brief instant before the club continues forward into a divot. That compression is what generates the spin and trajectory control irons are known for. A perfectly level or ascending strike with an iron typically produces a thin, low, poorly-spun shot — the opposite of what most golfers want from that club.
What "Too Steep" Actually Looks Like
Problems show up at the extremes, not from hitting down in general. A very steep descending angle — well beyond what's typical for a given swing speed — tends to produce ballooning, excessively spinny shots that lose distance, along with deep divots and inconsistent strike location. It also raises effective loft more than most golfers realize, which is why steep attackers are frequently over-lofted in their current irons without knowing it.
What "Too Shallow" Looks Like
On the other end, an attack angle that's too close to level for an iron often produces thin contact and a lower, weaker ball flight than the loft on the club would suggest. This is common among golfers who've been told to "sweep" their irons based on advice meant for fairway woods, not the steeper delivery irons actually need.
How This Changes Set Fitting
Once we know your typical iron attack angle, it directly informs static loft and shaft recommendations. A shallower descending angle usually needs slightly more loft to reach an efficient launch window; a steeper one usually needs slightly less, since the extra dynamic loft from the angle itself is already doing some of that work.
The goal isn't a shallower or steeper attack angle in the abstract — it's a consistent one that the rest of your spec is actually built around.
Consistency Matters as Much as the Number
A golfer whose attack angle varies significantly from swing to swing will see inconsistent dispersion no matter how well the clubs are specced, since the spec can only be built around one number at a time. Part of a fitting session is checking that variance, not just the average.
