Dynamic Loft vs. Static Loft: What Attack Angle Does to Your Numbers
The loft stamped on a clubhead and the loft it actually presents at impact are rarely the same number — attack angle is the biggest reason why.
Static loft is simple: it's the angle measured on the clubhead at rest, the number printed in a spec sheet or stamped near the hosel. Dynamic loft is the angle the face actually presents to the ball at the moment of impact, and it's almost always a different number — sometimes dramatically so.
Why the Two Numbers Diverge
Several things shift static loft into dynamic loft during the swing: shaft lean at impact, face rotation, and attack angle all play a part. Of these, attack angle has one of the most direct and predictable effects. A descending attack angle effectively reduces the loft presented to the ball, because the club is still moving downward as it strikes, compressing the ball at a lower effective angle than the static number suggests. An ascending attack angle does the opposite, adding effective loft.
A Concrete Example
Take a 10.5° driver. A golfer with a −3° attack angle might present something closer to 8–9° of dynamic loft at impact once the descending path and typical shaft lean are factored in. A golfer with a +4° attack angle swinging the same head might present closer to 12–13° of dynamic loft. Same club, same static loft, two very different launch conditions — which is exactly why the same off-the-rack driver loft doesn't work for every golfer.
Two golfers can own the identical driver head and loft and still need completely different static lofts to reach the same dynamic loft target.
Why This Is the Core of Loft Fitting
Fitting for loft isn't really about picking a static number off a chart — it's about working backward from a target dynamic loft, using your measured attack angle to figure out what static loft gets you there. This is why two golfers with wildly different clubhead speeds can still end up in the same static loft, and two golfers with identical clubhead speed can end up several degrees apart.
Where This Shows Up Beyond the Driver
The same relationship holds on every club in the bag, though the magnitude is usually smaller on shorter clubs with less loft to begin with. It's most visible on driver and fairway wood fittings, where a few degrees of dynamic loft difference has an outsized effect on spin and launch angle.
